[news]: Sony Announces PSP UMDs Won’t Transfer to Vita for US Owners

While one of my big questions regarding the PlayStation Vita was answered last week concerning digital prices vs. retail prices,  one big question remained: What about my PSP games? In Japan, Sony introduced the UMD Passport program where gamers would be able to insert the game into their PSP, register it on the PSN and downloaded for a discounted price on the Vita.

Unfortunately for American Vita owners, this luxury will not be coming stateside, Sony announced today. You will still be able to download PSP games you’ve purchased digitally, but unless Sony changes their mind there will be no way to play those old UMDs on the Vita’s shiny new OLED screen.

This is such a shame to hear — I was really looking forward to playing some of my backlogged PSP games on my Vita in the upcoming weeks. Hopefully Sony will bring the UMD Passport program to us at a later date.

Sony’s PlayStation Vita will officially launch in North America on February 22.
